Stony Brook University is a public research university in Stony Brook, New York, United States. Founded in 1957 as the State University College on Long Island, it moved to Stony Brook in 1962 and is one of the State University of New York system's two flagship institutions; it is classified as an R1 university and, with Battelle, manages Brookhaven National Laboratory.
