Founded in 1826, Furman University is a private liberal arts university in Greenville, South Carolina, and the oldest private institution of higher learning in the state. Named for Baptist pastor Richard Furman, it became secular in 1992 while retaining the motto Christo et Doctrinae, meaning For Christ and Learning.
