The University of St Andrews was founded in 1410 when a charter of incorporation was granted to the Augustinian priory of St Andrews Cathedral. It expanded with the establishment of St Salvator’s College in 1450, St Leonard’s College in 1511, and St Mary’s College in 1537; some college buildings still in use, including St Salvator’s Chapel, date from this period. Teaching at the time was largely religious and was carried out by clerics associated with the cathedral.
