Newcastle University is a public research university based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, with overseas campuses in Singapore and Malaysia. Its origins lie in a school of medicine established in 1834 and a college of physical science founded in 1871; after becoming King's College in 1937, it gained university status as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne through an Act of Parliament in 1963. It is a red brick university and a founding member of the Russell Group.
