Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a public research university in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Its origins date to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, founded in 1823, and its predecessor institutions later developed into Liverpool Polytechnic. Following an Act of Parliament in 1992, Liverpool Polytechnic became Liverpool John Moores University, named after local businessman and philanthropist Sir John Moores.
