The Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg is a public research university in Würzburg, Germany, founded in 1402. It was closed in 1415 after a brief initial period and reopened in 1582 through the initiative of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. The university is a member of the U15 group of research-intensive German universities and the Coimbra Group, and 15 Nobel laureates have been affiliated with it.
