It was later reformed as an Ottoman higher education institution influenced by European approaches and has operated under its current name since 1933, making it the first university in modern Turkey. Its alumni include Nobel laureates Aziz Sancar and Orhan Pamuk, former Turkish President Abdullah Gül, and several former prime ministers of Turkey and Israel.
