The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn traces its origins to a mixed choir formed by the Estonia Society Musical Department before World War I. The Estonia Society established the Tallinn Higher Music School in 1918, which opened in 1919 and was renamed the Tallinn Conservatoire in 1923; after a State Drama School was added in 1938, the institution became the Estonian Academy of Music in 1993, while its Drama Faculty was renamed the Higher Theatre School in 1995.
